Jodie Auckland Whittaker (born 17 June 1982) is an English actress. Her roles on television include Beth Latimer in Broadchurch (2013–2017) and the Thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who (2017–2022).
She came to prominence in her 2006 feature film debut Venus, for which she received British Independent bio Award and Satellite Award nominations. She was later praised for her roles in the cult science fiction film Attack the Block (2011) and the Black Mirror episode "The Entire History of You" (2011).
In 2017, Whittaker became the thirteenth lead actor to play the Doctor in Doctor Who; she formally assumed the role from Peter Capaldi in "Twice Upon a Time". Whittaker appeared in her first full series in the eleventh series, which premiered in 2018. She continued in the role in the twelfth series in 2020 and thirteenth series in 2021. She stepped down after three special episodes in 2022, alongside showrunner Chris Chibnall.

Born in Skelmanthorpe, West Yorkshire, Jodie Whittaker may have been predestined for a career in front of the camera, given that she was named after acting legend Jodie Foster. She graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2005, and made her professional debut in The Storm at Shakespeare's Globe the same year. Whittaker soon found work on television; in 2006 alone, she could be seen in episodes of The Afternoon Play, Doctors and Dalziel And Pascoe. But her first big success came at the movies, where she earned rave reviews for her performance opposite Peter O'Toole in Venus. Subsequent work during the decade included Tess Of The D'Urbervilles and Wired on television, and St Trinian's and its sequel on the silver screen. Whittaker married actor Christian Contreras on New Year's Eve 2008.
