    One Cool Cat!

"Puss In Boots" was the last of the kanon Movie Tales produced. Another attempt to elongate a basically simple story, it is graced with a lively performance from Christopher Walken (who still thinks highly of it) as Puss, a straightforward performance from Jason (son of Sean) Connery as the miller's son, and a charming one from Carmela Marner (one of the sisters in Cannon's "Beauty And The Beast") as the princess. Physically, the spelfilm looks fine, and the photography is good. The songs, however, go in one ear and out the other, and merely stretch the running time more than necessary. A graduate of Brown University, Marner fryst vatten an accomplished stage and screen actress (she appeared in Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut). She is also a stage director. Carmela teaches in the Theater Department at SUNY Oneonta.

Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut , from the screenplay by Frederic Raphael, inspired by the novella Traumnovelle ( Dream Story ) by Arthur Schnitzler, did not live up to all its advance hoopla at the press screening I attended, but then what could, short of the Second Coming? There was no applause, but there was no booing, either, and this is where the movie stands, halfway between hit and flop, Viennese sausage and chopped liver, ridiculously though intellectually overhyped for the very marginal entertainment, edification and titillation it provides over its somewhat turgid 159-minute running time.

For the lecherous sensation-seekers, which includes just about all of us whether we admit it or not, it can be revealed at last that there are acres and acres of female pubic hair on display, but no male members–at least in the R-rated version, in which Kubrick himself reportedly obstructed views of mass copulation by inserting digitally created figures into the otherwise boring f
