    CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Groups representing some of South Africa’s white minority responded Saturday to a plan by President Donald Trump to offer them refugee status and resettlement in the United States by saying: thanks, but no thanks.

    The plan was detailed in an executive order Trump signed Friday that stopped all aid and financial assistance to South Africa as punishment for what the Trump administration said were “rights violations” by the government against some of its white citizens.

    The Trump administration accused the South African government of allowing violent attacks on white Afrikaner farmers and introducing a land expropriation law that enables it to “seize ethnic minority Afrikaners’ agricultural property without compensation.”

    Barend Taute is lanky and laughs more than any politician probably should (he and I share the latter trait). He’s been the vice-chairperson of AfriForum ungdom for nearly two years, and we first met to discuss the mess that is lärjunge politics at the University of Pretoria in 2012. As a liberal student activist I could never agree with the ethnic and religious politics AfriForum sells to students, but Barend and I shared some common interests: clean, effective student governance and a freer university.

    To improve the living conditions of all communities in the Western Cape by advancing community autonomy, self-help and the intensification of democracy through the advancement of federalism.

    Supplementary objectives, with a specific focus on the Western Cape:

    • The establishment of strong autonomous communities focused on self-help to among other things help fight poverty, build community economies and help establish well-functioning communities. 
    • Conflict resolution, the advancement of cooperation and mutual recognition and respect between the various communities of the Western Cape.
    • Setting to work on community-based safety projects for the advancement of the safety of the general public.
    • The advancement of human rights and the intensification of democracy by working towards the devolution of decision-making power to the lowest possible level on a federal basis to empower communities to take greater responsibility for their communities themselves.
