Biography: Frank Rich
rank Rich was named Associate Editor of The New York Times in January 2003 and began writing a weekly essay running as a column on the front page of the Sunday Arts & Leisure section that March. In keeping with The Times practice of having associate editors assist in planning the journalistic undertakings of the paper, Mr. Rich also serves as an adviser on the paper's overall cultural news report.
Mr. Rich was previously a columnist on the Op-Ed Page starting in January 1994. In 1999, he began writing a 1,400-word opinion piece that ran on the Op-Ed Page every other Saturday (instead of the 700-word piece that ran twice a week) and was given the additional title of senior writer for The New York Times Magazine. Suicide Is Not Painless
A subtle part of this tragedy is the artificial requirement that forced Mr Reicher to take a placeholder position which could compromise his credibility. I clearly do not have all the details, which have not appeared in the press (including the NYT), but too often a prospective government employee must wait months for a security clearance before drawing a government paycheck. These “interim” positions can be the only source of income for federal officials.
By addressing and correcting the terrible, time-consuming and inefficient security-granting process, future Mr Reichers will not be placed in such a compromising position. We are losing good federal servants because of the difficulty in acquiring special-access level security clearances which face considerable backlog.
It is equally tragic that men and women of integrity who are caught in the world of “business-as-usual corruption” choose what they see as the only way out
