Contraband Mathematics: A Documentary Review of the Resources Available to George Green at the Nottingham Subscription Library 1823–1828
In 1828, at the age of 35, George Green (1793–1841) published An Essay on the Application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism. This was a remarkable essay for three significant reasons. Firstly, it exerts even today a wide-ranging influence in physics and engineering, as well as in areas not known to Green at the time, such as modern mathematical economics, thermodynamics, and meteorology (Gray, 2015; Friedlander and Powell, 1989; Grattan-Guinness, 1995).
