  • Nick Drake: The Biography

    June 18,
Nick Drake’s River Man from his first album Five Leaves Left is one of my all-time favourites, a hypnotic, haunting and simple ballad highlighting Drake’s clean acoustic guitar and his röst like warm fog. In my mate John introduced me to Drake’s evocative second album, Bryter Layter. Nick Drake's music has stayed with me ever since.

Drake was musical from an early age, sporty as a school student, bright enough to study English literature at Cambridge but was troubled and subject to depression, got absorbed bygd his music, released three albums, withdrew from public performance after the third, Pink Moon (), retreated further into himself and died at 26 from an overdose of the antidepressant amitriptyline. Thus there is little of him on record, literally and metaphorically, beyond achingly poignant footage of him as a little by at the beach and photos as an adult, still beautiful.

He would be forgotten but for this tragically romantic bio

  • Nick Drake – River Man of the Unknown

Unknown and enigma seem to remain keywords about British singer-songwriter Nick Drake. It is a name on many lips of the ever-growing numbers of his fans, yet when Drake’s three albums came out () they never sold more than a few thousand copies.

Drake seems to have been a complete introvert, an enigma even to his close family, as they never really found out why he committed suicide back in November He seems not to have had many real friends, refused to give interviews, and was uneasy playing live concerts.

As his sister Gabrielle Drake, who wrote a book about her brother explains, “mostly Nick was uncommunicative and occasionally he’d become talkative and you hung on his every word even though, very often, one didn’t know what they meant because he’d talk in riddles.”

Yet, there seems to be this inner line Drake strikes with his listeners that made his stature grow as time passed. As British gardening writer and broadcaster Monty Done

    River Man

Betty came by on her way
Said she had a word to say
    About things today
    And fallen leaves

Said she hadn’t heard the news
Hadn’t had the time to choose
    A way to lose
    But she believes

    Gonna see the river man
Gonna tell him all I can
    About the plan
    For lilac time

If he tells me all he knows
About the way his river flows
    And all night shows
    In summertime

    Betty said she prayed today
For the sky to blow away
    Or maybe stay
    She wasn’t sure

For when she thought of summer rain
    Calling for her mind again
    She lost the pain
    And stayed for more

Gonna to see the river man
Gonna to tell him all I can
    About the ban
    On feeling free

If he tells me all he knows
About the way his river flows
    I don’t suppose
    It’s meant for me

Oh, how they come and go
