DETROIT -- Vice President Joe Biden surprised crowds at the North American International Auto Show on Tuesday, touring Big 3 displays at the annual Detroit exhibition.

The tour followed a speech at Detroit's Motor City Match awards presentation earlier in the day.

President Barack Obama toured the auto show last year.

Biden said during the tour he believes electric cars will eventually become the norm.

"I think in the next 10 to 15 years, the majority of vehicles are going to be electric," Biden said. "It's why the president and I just announced we're supporting 25,000 miles of stations along interstate highways to continue to encourage people to move in that direction."

Biden met briefly at each stop with Ford CEO Mark Fields, GM Vice President Mark Reuss and Fiat Chrysler's head of North American manufacturing Brian Harlow.
