    During my first entry, I took a little bit of time to introduce myself, as well as talk a little bit about the sport of skeleton. With the big day quickly approaching, I thought it would be good to introduce you to some of my equipment and the routine I go through in preparing it all the night before a race.

    Just over a month ago, the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, came to a close. In the United States, these games will be remembered for how Norway, a small European country, dominated, while American athletes and teams struggled. Yet, not that long ago in , Americans were on top of the world when it came to winter sports like bobsledding and skeleton, and some of this success can be attributed to, of all things, firefighting.

    That year, the U.S. Olympic grupp won three medals between men’s and women’s skeleton racing, with Lea Ann Parsley winning silver. The year-old had only been a skeleton racer for about four years when she qualified for the Olympics. If it weren’t for her experience as a firefighter, who knows if she would have been prepared physically for the rigorous training that comes with being an Olympic athlete.     Having watched a former basketball teammate compete in handball at the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Parsley-Davenport decided to give the sport a try. She was a quick study, and was in contention for a spot on the squad until suffering a thumb injury.

    However, she was invited to be a member of the team’s operations staff and traveled with the team to the Pan-American Games. One of Parsley-Davenport’s duties was trying to secure sponsors for the team, which, at the time, was underfunded in comparison to the men’s squad, according to Parsley-Davenport. It was while searching online for possible sponsors that she came across a web page that detailed various female winter sports, one of which was bobsled.

    “I was like, ‘Wait a minute?’ I didn’t even know women were in bobsled,” Parsley-Davenport said. “They weren’t Olympic, but they were trying to be, and I thought, ‘Wow, that looks really fun. I’d really like to g
