Charlie Soong, born in , was a new kind of figure in Chinese history, an independent-minded youngster with an openness to the world who came to Boston from Hainan Island at the age of twelve to work in a store. At fourteen he stowed away on a Coast Guard cutter, was baptized a Christian, enrolled in school, and learned enough English to graduate from Vanderbilt. Returning to his homeland as a preacher and Bible salesman, he became an innovative businessman in eastern China. Before dying at the age of fifty-two in his Shanghai mansion, Charlie married and had six children, three boys (two of whom graduated from Harvard and one from Vanderbilt) and three girls.

Chiang Kai-shek[a] (31 October 5 April ) was a Chinese politician, revolutionary, and general who led the Republic of China (ROC) from until his death in His government was based in mainland China until it was defeated in the Chinese Civil War by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in , after which he continued to lead the Republic of China on the island of Taiwan. Chiang served as leader of the Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) party and the commander-in-chief of the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) from until his death, during which he was known as Generalissimo.

She came from the most important 20th century Chinese family. Her name means Lucky Years and she, her two sisters, and her brother played a remarkable role in Chinas history. All of them were children of Han Jin Shun (known as Charlie Soong), a Chinese Methodist. He made sure all of them were American educated.

Soong Mai-ling became the wife of Chinas Chang Kai-shek. She would become prominent in China and Taiwan and highly influential in the United States.
Soong Ching-ling would marry the founder of modern China Sun Yat-sen (–). After Suns death in she would remain prominent in Chinese politics, eventually siding with the communists. She was deeply revered in China, as is Sun Yat-sen to this day, and for a brief period () was the Acting President of the PRC, the first and only woman president of mainland China.
