Hirano was born in Gamagori City, Aichi Prefecture, in , and hails from Kitakyushu City. He graduated from the Kyoto University Faculty of Law. In , while still a student, he won the th Akutagawa Prize for his novel The Eclipse, which was submitted to the literary magazine “Shincho.” The book was published in by Shinchosha. It became a bestseller with , copies sold. Since then, his work has been published in a variety of styles that change with each work and has been translated and introduced in various countries.
