Many loosely connected characters cross paths in this film, based on the stories of Raymond Carver. Waitress Doreen Piggot (Lily Tomlin) accidentally runs into a boy with her car. Soon after walking away, the child lapses into a coma. While at the hospital, the boy's grandfather (Jack Lemmon) tells his son, Howard (Bruce Davison), about his past affairs. Meanwhile, a baker (Lyle Lovett) starts harassing the family when they fail to pick up the boy's birthday cake.

San Francisco filmmaker Daniel Kremer has provided audio commentary tracks for biograf Lorber, Shout! Factory, AGFA, and Scorpion disc releases, and essays for Twilight Time special editions. His acclaimed epic-length film Overwhelm the Sky (2019), adapted from a 1799 American Gothic novel, was screened internationally in classic  roadshow format, complete with öppningsstycke, intermission, and printed souvenir programs. These deluxe screenings received  many accolades before Kino Lorber acquired distribution rights. Kremer's book Sidney J. Furie: Life and Films was published through Patrick McGilligan's Screen Classics Series in 2015. He is currently under contract at Oxford University Press for the first book about Joan Micklin Silver. His other films include the independent dramas Raise Your Kids on Seltzer (2015) and Ezer Kenegdo (2017). He  enjoys doing commentary tracks with fellow TFH guru Allan Arkush.

A different kind of L.A. Story

Robert Altman has never shied away from casting every actor known to mankind in his films, and this is certainly true with his 1993 film "Short Cuts", a film set in Los Angeles over the course of a couple of days. In terms of primary actors, ones that had a substantial enough part to merit a supporting tag, I count at least 22; but more impressive than the sheer number of the cast is the fact that the film does not suffer from character overload, nor do their intertwining stories (and they are all separated bygd no more than one or two degrees).

I started this review by going through each character and the story each brings to the table, but after about three paragraphs worth of explanation, it is clear that it is not only a bad idea, but probably counterproductive to the review itself.
