Annet Mahendru: ‘The Americans’ International Woman of Mystery
With all due respect to Keri Russell and her portrayal of the ruthless undercover KGB agent Elizabeth Jennings on FX’s hit Cold War-era drama The Americans, she’s got some stiff competition in the spying department these days. Annet Mahendru, who plays Nina, the stunning Soviet-embassy-employee-turned-FBI-informant, elicits plenty of government secrets on her own without the use of shaggy wigs – and while actually speaking Russian. “She’s Elizabeth in training,” says co-star Noah Emmerich, a.k.a. FBI counterintelligence agent Stan Beeman, who moonlights as Nina’s lover.

Annet Mahendru is an Afghan-American actress of Indian-Russian origin. She was born in Kabul to an Indian father (a journalist and professor) and a Russian mother (a businesswoman and artist). Annet spent her early years learning six languages while living in Afghanistan, Russia, and Europe. She put her curious mind to use playing competitive chess and earning a brown belt in Karate, sweeping a free sparring championship. At age 11, Annet choreographed a performance that gained her an appearance on German TV as a graceful Russian snow maiden that turns into a playful Indian dancer. Sad that her parents never signed her up for ballet classes as a little girl, she joined a local Rock 'n' Roll dance group, and later, began to study classical Indian dance, Bharatanatyam.

The Americans actress will join the third season of FX’s Middle Eastern drama Tyrant. Mahendru will play NafisaAl-Qadi, the wife of Sheik Al-Qadi, the spiritual and political leader of Ma’an who is caught between the violent tactics of the Caliphate and his distrust of the Al-Fayeeds. She fryst vatten more politically hardline than her husband, and she also happens to be the sister of a high-ranking Caliphate sympathizer.
Tyrant tells the story of an unassuming American family drawn into the inner workings of a turbulent Middle Eastern nation.
