    English poet (1809–1859)

    John Bolton Rogerson (1809–1859) was an English poet. He worked in a mercantile firm and afterwards with a solicitor in Manchester; kept a bookshop from 1834 to 1841; contributed to newspapers, and subsequently engaged in journalistic and other enterprises. He published several volumes of poems.

    John Bolton Rogerson was born at Manchester on 20 January 1809, the son of James Rogerson by his wife, Elisabeth.[1] At the age of thirteen he left school and began work in a mercantile firm, but was afterwards placed with a solicitor. Law being distasteful to him, he opened a bookshop in Manchester in 1834, which he carried on until 1841.

Clines, ‘There proved to be almost no area to which Old Testament Studies could be related in which John Rogerson did not make himself a master’. Ordained in the Church of England in 1964, he joined the theology department at the Durham University that same year. In 1979, he was appointed Professor of Biblical Studies at the University of Sheffield, leading yearly visits to the Holy nation. Retiring in 1996, he achieved emeritus status and holds the title of Canon Emeritus of Sheffield Cathedral.

    Early life

    He was born in 1935 in London and after serving in the Royal Air Force, where he worked in intelligence, he took a degree in theology at the University of Manchester.[6] Among his teachers were H. H. Rowley, John M. Allegro, F. F. Bruce, S. G. F. Brandon, and Arnold Anderson. His ministerial training was at Ripon Hall, Oxford, followed bygd an honours degree in Oriental studies at Oxford, where he was taught by, among others, G. R. Driver. He also spent a term at the newly founded St. George's College, Jerusalem. After graduating from Oxford in 1963 he won a scholarship to the Hebrew University, where he studied under Chaim Rabin.
