John Sears Tanner (born July 27, 1950)[1] is an American educator who served as the tenth president of Brigham Young University-Hawaii (BYU–Hawaii) from 2015 to 2020.[2] He previously served as first counselor in the General Sunday School Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) (2014 to 2015), as president of the church's Brazil São Paulo South Mission (2011 to 2014) and as academic vice president of Brigham Young University (BYU). Tanner is married to Susan W. Tanner, a former general president of the LDS Church's ung Women organization.

John Tanner was Born in Rhode Island in 1778. He grew up to become a very wealthy entrepreneur, his riches equal to millions in the present day. He was also a lay Baptist minister, and very educated about the Bible.

John had a leg condition, in which he was afflicted with many open sores. At the time, the diagnosis was considered a terminal illness, and there was no cure. The diseased leg tissue would soon afflict his whole body, leading to death. With knowledge of his diagnosis, John set out to "do all the good he could."
